In his inimitable way, David Letterman set up Scott Dixon to hit a home run.
"After 500 miles, is milk what you really want to drink?" Letterman asked 92nd Indianapolis 500 champion Dixon during an appearance on the "Late Show with David Letterman" on June 2.
"That milk could have been a glass of mud for all I care at that point. It was the best moment," Dixon said of the 500-Mile Race tradition in Victory Circle.
Spoken like a true champion.
The guest appearance wrapped up the Indy 500 Victory Tour for Dixon - who wore a suit and tie at the behest of his wife, Emma - that included four cities in a week. Oh, he also fit in an IndyCar Series race at The Milwaukee Mile on June 1, in which he finished second in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car.
On June 3, Dixon took part in a special training session for speed, power and vision at the Michael Johnson Performance Center in McKinney, Texas. He'll compete, along with 27 other drivers, in the Bombardier Learjet 550k on Saturday night, June 7 at Texas Motor Speedway.
As a lad in New Zealand, Dixon watched the Indianapolis 500 annually on TV and dreamed of the scenario of holding the milk bottle in Victory Circle.
"It's obviously the biggest spectacle in racing and the biggest one-day sporting event in the world," Dixon said. "It was a big deal (as a youngster), and for me to finally to get to the race and watch as a spectator in 2002 was the only way you could really feel it."
"To get there and see almost 400,000 people watching you and to one day be in winner's circle drinking the milk is amazing."
