1985 Indy 500 Winner Sullivan Hitting The Road At Sebring

1985 Indianapolis 500 winner Danny Sullivan will return behind the wheel of a race car to drive a factory-built Ferrari sports car in the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring on March 17-20, 2004.

Sullivan, 53, will drive a Ferrari 575 GTC fielded by Barron Connor Racing of the Netherlands at the 12 Hours of Sebring at Sebring, Fla., America's oldest sports car race. The car will race in the GTS class of the American Le Mans Series, with primary competition coming from the factory Chevrolet Corvettes.

"I'm really excited about being back in the saddle again and racing at Sebring," Sullivan said. "I've raced at Sebring a few times but never had the results I'd have liked. This opportunity has come together for me to go there and have some fun again."

Sullivan won the 1985 Indianapolis 500 with his famous "spin and win" in which he spun on Lap 120 yet rallied for victory in the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

A native of Louisville, Ky., Sullivan is no stranger to endurance sports car racing. He has made 10 starts in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, four starts in the 12 Hours of Sebring and three starts in the Le Mans 24 Hours. His best Sebring finish of seventh came in 1988 as a teammate to Jan Lammers, John Nielsen and Indianapolis 500 veteran Davy Jones.

In recent years, Sullivan has driven in historic racing events, including the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed. He also has served as the director of the Red Bull Driver Search Program, designed to groom a young American Formula One driver, since its inception in 2002. ***
